Omanyala Settles for Eighth in Rome Diamond League, Set to Earn Prize Money Despite Tough Outing

Kenya’s sprint sensation Ferdinand Omanyala endured a difficult evening at the Rome Diamond League after finishing eighth in a highly competitive men's 100-metre race dominated by Olympic champion Noah Lyles.

Omanyala, who had enjoyed an impressive start to the 2026 season, crossed the finish line in 10.11 seconds, falling behind a world-class field that included some of the fastest sprinters on the planet. American star Noah Lyles stormed to victory in a season-best 9.88 seconds, while Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme and Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo completed the podium positions. (

Despite the disappointing result, the African record holder remains one of the continent’s leading hopes in the sprint events as he continues preparations for major championships later this year.

Under the 2026 Wanda Diamond League prize-money structure, athletes who finish eighth in a Diamond discipline receive USD 1,000 (approximately KSh 129,000, depending on exchange rates). The prize is awarded regardless of whether the event is classified as a standard Diamond or Diamond+ discipline.

In addition to the prize money, Omanyala is expected to collect one Diamond League point for his eighth-place finish as he seeks qualification for the season-ending Diamond League Final in Brussels.

The Rome result marks a rare setback for the Kenyan speedster, who has been among the standout performers on the Diamond League circuit this season. However, with several meetings still remaining on the calendar, Omanyala will have opportunities to bounce back and strengthen his bid for a place in the prestigious Diamond League Final.

Athletics fans in Kenya will now turn their attention to his upcoming races, hoping the African record holder can rediscover the form that has made him one of the most feared sprinters in world athletics.
